New York is served by three major airports, which gives you plenty of choice on times and fares. JFK handles most long-haul international flights, LaGuardia focuses on domestic routes close to Manhattan, and Newark in New Jersey is a big hub for both.

Major airports

  • JFK, John F. Kennedy International Airport
  • LGA, LaGuardia Airport
  • EWR, Newark Liberty International Airport

Airlines you'll often see

Delta, JetBlue, American Airlines, United, plus many international carriers at JFK and Newark. Routes and schedules change, so search your dates to see who flies when.

Best time to visit

Spring (April to June) and fall (September to early November) bring mild weather. Late November through December is festive but busy and pricier; January and February are usually the cheapest months to fly.

Getting from the airport

JFK connects to the subway and Long Island Rail Road by AirTrain; Newark connects to NJ Transit and Amtrak by AirTrain; LaGuardia is reached by bus or taxi.

Travel tips

  • Compare all three airports: the cheapest fare is often at a different one than you expect.
  • Allow extra time for traffic to LaGuardia and JFK at rush hour.
  • AirTrain links JFK and Newark to rail and subway connections.
