Passports, visas, arrival times and what to pack in your carry-on: the essentials, in order.
Weeks before you fly
- Check your passport's expiry date. Many countries want it valid for several months beyond your stay.
- Check whether you need a visa or electronic travel authorization, including for countries where you connect.
- Make sure the name on your ticket exactly matches your passport.
- Tell your bank you'll be traveling.
The day before
- Check in online if your airline allows it.
- Confirm your flight times and terminal.
- Pack chargers, adapters and any medicines in your carry-on.
At the airport
For international flights, many travelers aim to arrive about three hours before departure. Airlines close check-in and boarding earlier for international flights than domestic ones.
