Carry-on vs. checked bags: the basics before you fly

By Tripobiz Travel Team. Published September 18, 2026. 5 min read.

What usually counts as a personal item, a carry-on and a checked bag, and how to avoid surprise fees at the airport.

Three kinds of bags

Airlines generally separate baggage into three types. Sizes and weights differ by airline, so always check the rules for your fare.

  • Personal item: a small bag that fits under the seat in front of you.
  • Carry-on: a larger bag for the overhead bin.
  • Checked bag: goes in the hold and is collected at baggage claim.

Why your fare matters

Basic or lowest fares may include only a personal item. Standard fares often include a carry-on, and many international fares include a checked bag. The fare details shown before you book tell you what's included.

Ways to avoid surprise fees

  • Check the allowance for every airline on your trip, including connections.
  • Weigh your bag at home.
  • Add bags before the airport; it's often cheaper than paying at the counter.
  • Keep medicines, documents and valuables in your carry-on.

Liquids in your carry-on

In the U.S., TSA's 3-1-1 rule limits carry-on liquids to containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, in one quart-size bag. Rules can differ in other countries, so check before you fly home.
